Bird Conservation
For 50 years, the Copper Country Bird Club has worked to understand, protect, and advocate for the birds of the Keweenaw. Through local research, conservation partnerships, and community involvement, we help safeguard the shorelines, wetlands, and forests birds rely on for migration, nesting, and survival.

Houghton Bird City Initiative
Houghton Bird City is a growing community effort working toward national recognition for making our region safer for birds. By protecting habitat, reducing threats like window collisions and excess lighting, and engaging residents in conservation and education, Bird City invites everyone to play a role in creating a healthier environment - for birds and for people.

Safe Passage Great Lakes
Millions of birds migrate through the Great Lakes each year, with the Keweenaw Peninsula serving as a critical stopover along Lake Superior. Artificial night lighting can disorient migrating birds and increase deadly window collisions. Reducing unnecessary lighting during peak migration:
-
Spring (March 15–May 31)
-
Fall (August 15–October 31)
helps keep birds safe. Simple actions by homeowners, businesses, and building managers can make a real difference for birds moving through the Copper Country.
